Even the New York Giants shocked the soccer world by choosing Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the sixth-overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, and though the franchise has deemed Jones the ultimate successor to longtime starter Eli Manning, lots of fans of Big Blue wish to find the young gun take the field out of the gate.
Jones needed a sparkling debut in Week 1 of this preseason, going 5-for-5 for 67 yards and a touchdown in his first activity under center for a pro. It’s a little sample size, however, Jones’ drama has already made critics think that he deserves a chance to instantly supplant Manning as the starting QB.
New York’s decision to select Jones at No. 6 was a puzzling one at the moment, especially since it possessed the No. 17 pick and could have probably selected Jones then. Online sportsbook BetOnline has released odds where signal-caller will begin more games in 2019, using Manning because the -150 preferred and Jones as the +110 underdog.
That is actually the Giants we’re talking about, though, so don’t be surprised if Jones barely sees the field at this past year. On Tuesday, Giants owner John Mara backed up his two-time Super Bowl winner by stating”I hope Eli has a terrific year and Daniel never sees this area. That would be an ideal world. We would love to see that.” In -150, Manning seems like a lock to start more games than Jones to mepersonally, if Manning deserves it or not.
The Giants are definitely not prepared to proceed from Manning at any stage in the not too distant future, and the prospect of a contract extension for your 38-year-old after this year is a realistic possibility. After all, shortly after general director Dave Gettleman chose Joneshe told colleagues that he envisioned a possible Brett Favre/Aaron Rodgers situation occurring because of his team, with Jones sitting several years to learn by Manning.
Have a peek at the rest of the props on the board. Do you think Jones has a chance to replace Manning in 2019, or is Peyton’s younger brother as the starter even if the Giants battle this season? Have your say at the comment department.
