Money Line Pick
The Rangers had recently been one of the hottest teams in the league and were looking like a legitimate playoff contender. However, a recent three-game losing streak has put a pin in their playoff hopes for the moment. Washington on the other hand, got back to their winning ways with a close 4-3 over Minnesota this past weekend. They do play on Wednesday night, so this Thursday game could be a bad spot for them on the second night of a back to back. Note that the Capitals are 22-10-1 on the road, one of the best marks in the NHL. They are also 6-2-1 with no rest this season, so playing on Wednesday should not be a big deal. The Rangers are also worse at home than they are on the road, so I will lean with the Caps here to get the road win.
Over Under Pick
I like the total a little more here because these two teams tend to be high scoring sides. Both are averaging 3 goals or more per game. Furthermore, New York’s defense is starting to struggle, allowing 4.3 goals per game during their losing streak. The over is 6-2 in the last 8 games for the Rangers and 3-1 in the Capitals last 4 games (not including Wednesday’s result). I look for the defensive issues to persist for New York and will take the over with medium confidence.
