The 13th seed, who knocked out defending winner Naomi Osaka in the last round, won 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 against her great friend.
She’ll confront Canadian Bianca Andreescu or Elise Mertens .
The 22-year-old will return to the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time in more than three decades.
Earlier wrist surgery and injuries left her since reduced as 328th, she attained a career-high seventh.
“I dreamed of this like a small kid so I’m here I am actually enjoying it,” explained Bencic, who finished a wake-up wait to improve on her previous best Grand Slam showing of a US Open quarter-final.
Bencic, that was knocked out of the French Open by Vekic in May, got the better of her partner that was hitting now around in a match full of baseline rallies.
Vekic, 23, had her chance at the first group, in which she broke into the game but didn’t serve it with it going to some tie-break, which Bencic took charge of.
The Swiss broke twice when Vekic hit a forehand wide, sealing victory.
The pair shared a warm embrace and Bencic was confident their friendship would survive.
“We are both professional enough to become friends off the court and competitive on the court,” Bencic stated. “I believe we did well. I’m sure off the court we’re friends still.”
