(CNN) — For more than a decade, the United States maintained its dominance in global men’s soccer. All of that changed when Team USA dropped its first game into Australia since 2006.
The Boomers, ranked 11th by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), won its first game against No. 1 rated USA, beating the group 98-94. The game has been played having a bunch of more than 52,000, the largest crowd ever to see basketball in Australia.
The US had won 78 games in exhibitions and major tournaments before Saturday’s World Cup exhibition matchup.
“The Aussies gave us a wonderful lesson as much as we have to be and we have to play in this kind of contest,” US head coach Gregg Popovich said after the match. “So, we will get used to this and hopefully learn.”
The loss includes two days after the US defeat Australia 102-86 on Thursday. Was through the 2006 semifinals of the FIBA World Championship.
“Nobody wins indefinitely,” Popovich said.
The US’ exhibition is Monday against Canada in Sydney before going to the World Cup in China. There the defending World Cup champion will face the Czech Republic on September 1.
