Paul Merson believes Chelsea do not have the panic factor they once had, however, says patience is key under Frank Lampard.
After arriving from Derby from the summer, Lampard has picked up five points dropping leads in both of the matches.
Prior to throwing away a 2-0 lead against newly-promoted Sheffield United on Saturday they drew 1-1 with Leicester on August 18.
But using a transfer ban set up, Merson considers patience is critical, with Chelsea fielding one of the youngest ages within their XIs this season.
Chelsea were defeated 4-0 by Manchester United on the opening day of this season, but speaking on The Debate, Merson considers game management in their two home draws has been most worrying.
“I was disappointed with them in the last half an hour against Man Utd, I believed they threw in the towel and drifted away.
“But it’s a tough one; as a new supervisor that you want to appear and amuse. I am a Chelsea fan. If Mourinho had been 2-0 up from Sheffield United, he place on the other defensive player and’d bring a striker . This was the conclusion of the game, ending of, along with the other team understood that .
“The other groups do not understand that now. Chelsea have not got that fear factor. Currently, teams such as Leicester can remain in the match against them, and towards the end it seemed like maybe Leicester would win it.”
Merson believes Lampard will be overachieving if he managed to sneak Chelsea this season, also states some of his own squad’s inexperience, including Tammy Abraham and the impressive Mason Mount, should let more time to him.
“I like Frank, and I believe you receive experience as you proceed. Would someone else have played with Mason Mount? He’s a special player. And today Tammy Abraham has four goals.
“We only do it by learning, you do not have five games in the future and say:’You’re from the team,’ if they are not performing. You return to square one just like that. Patience, patience. These are kids that are young.
“Man City and Liverpool are far ahead of everyone now, this is not the same situation. If Chelsea ended in the top four this season, Frank will get director of this calendar year, in my view ”
Merson also enjoys that Lampard, as a Chelsea legend and director, may feel inclined if his side are leading to amuse the crowd. His advice to Lampard would be to’Do a Mourinho!” And choose the points.
“Winning games is a hard thing to do when you’ve lost your best player, and among the best players in the world in Hazard. Frank is up against it. In the moment, I think you do not always have to amuse, although I think he’ll have patience. Do a Mourinho!
“You occasionally think in a job:’Oh, so I must stay entertaining here, otherwise the fans are going to find the hump!’ In the long run, you do not need to do so, you have to be clued up, just take the three points.”
