The resurgence of Bryce Harper was on display again last night, as he blasted another important home run from the park. With the Padres pulling within 2 in what was a 5-0 match, Harper set the match out of reach with a 3-run shot to the seats.
The Padres tacked to a late run to make it an 8-4 game, although that was for a comeback bid . It turned out to be a big win for the Phillies after sweeping the Cubs in three matches. There was some concern that the Phillies might have a hangover, but that was immediately put to rest on Friday night in Citizens Bank Park.
They look determined to get to the postseason and have done themselves some favors in that regard recently. The Brewers, Mets, and Cubs all lost, so that helps them out in the NL wildcard race. Acquiring the Braves looks next to impossible in a 7-game hole at the NL East.
However, keep playing like this and winning the Wild Card Game looks like a true chance. The run was spurred by a popular run by Bryce Harper in the plate. It wasn’t a secret that even the Phillies wanted him to get going to the Phillies to really have a shot.
Along with Harper swinging the bat , the Philadelphia bullpen will need to continue producing down the stretch too. There are a whole good deal of teams that are on pins and needles whenever they choose a slender lead in the 8th and 9th innings of games. The Phillies recently obtained Jared Hughes away waivers to aid their bullpen a bit. With all of the injuries that the relievers have suffered because of the Phillies, they have been trying to add a new arm using Zach Eflin being inserted into the starting rotation.
Eflin will get the nod tonight for his first start since July 27th from the Braves. He had been getting punished on the bump and has been demoted to the bullpen after that effort. Eflin was pitching well in the bullpen, but they need him to pitch well in the spinning. The Padres will counter with sophomore Dinelson Lamet since their starting hurler Saturday night. The Phillies were abandoned having a couple of options with Zach Eflin. Either send him down to the minors and find it off or out into the bullpen. They went with option B plus it seemed to payoff. The Phillies’ bullpen needed depth, therefore it made sense to allow Eflin to throw from the bullpen. Back in 5.2 innings as a reliever, in his four most recent looks, Eflin was solid having allowed just 3 hits and also 1-run during that stretch. This was after he was getting drilled in a starting job.
Before getting demoted to the bullpen, Eflin was struck for a 11.37 ERA and 2.05 WHIP in 3 starts resulting in his stay in the pencil. He’d permitted 19 earned runs in 15.2 innings of play prior to trying out as a reliever. I wouldn’t be surprised to find the Padres frustrating Eflin within his return to the starting rotation. Having said that, together with the Phillies swinging a hot bat, Eflin is probably going to have lots of run support on Saturday.
Even the Phillies have scored 26 runs in their last three games. Bryce Harper united for 10 RBI’s in those three matches. Dating back to August 9th, Harper has 16 RBI’s because there. Lamet has played nicely in seven outings, as he enters with a 3.86 ERA in his second season as a major leaguer.
This looks like a tricky matchup contrary to the Victorian Phillies, though. Philadelphia are ruining the ball and there have not been any indications that they are slowing down. The last score should enter the double digits, therefore the OVER looks like it’s well worth a look.
