Money Line Pick
New York City had a disappointing end to the season last year as they were knocked out of the playoffs pretty early. They have already had several friendlies before the season, so they should be warmed up and ready to go. Their most recent games saw them beat San Carlos in the CONCACAF Champions League in two-legs. They won the first leg 5-3 and the second leg 1-0 to win 6-3 on aggregate. Columbus on the other hand, have not played a preseason game, so they could come out a little rigid. NYCFC beat Columbus once last season an also played to a draw in the other meeting. Because New York City has a few games under their belt, I look for them to win this game without much issue.
Over Under Pick
NYCFC have already shown they can score at an elite level, scoring 8 goals in their four preseason games. Their defense has also been leaky, allowing 7 goals during the same stretch. The Crew picked up Darlington Nagbe in the offseason to help with goal scoring. Paired with Gyasi Zardes, this duo could become a threat if they can develop the right chemistry. I do not love this total because it is the first game of the season, but I would lean over mainly because NYCFC has shown the ability to score like it is nothing.
