It might be new to others, but for Mets’ fans they’ve seen this same story played out before. After return to creep up at the National League, the Mets have suddenly ran into a wall and are looking to start a winning streak going into September. The Mets were beating up bad teams throughout their 15-1 romp. The noteworthy team they beat during this run was that the Washington Nationals.
From sweeping the Nationals since becoming blocked, the Mets have looked like a very ordinary group. Since beating the Twins on July 17th, both the Nationals and Indians are the series they have won from contending teams. Everyone else will be in the cellar.
The Mets head to Philadelphia for a touch matchup against the Phillies this weekend. They did not make the most of their show at home against the Cubs, a group who are bad on the road. That could come back to haunt them from September’s end.
It was at Citi Field in on the heels of a terrible effort from the Braves. Variance can be an ugly thing for a group who had been on fire. They have a whole month. There aren’t any mulligans later this.
The following week will be tough on the Mets. They’re in Washington and Philadelphia, and then the Phillies again for second weekend. Subsequently a four-game series against the Diamondbacks is not a given. In town to get a three-game show during the weekend, the Dodgers have been in two weeks.
With those games in mind, it’s not going to be a simple month on the Mets. We are currently going to find out if they are for real or not. It’s likely to be a significant month for the Phillies too. The Mets do not get the advantage of getting to play with that weekend to a pushover. There will not be. Keeping that in mind, the Mets have to discover a way to get focused in Philadelphia against a Phillies team searching for exactly the goal. Zack Wheeler will likely asked to put in a solid night in this one on the street. Wheeler has been pitching like a guy the Mets should have traded.
He’s a bit cuter, however, is effective at turning it on any given night. Wheeler was trapped in a funk. He’s submitted an ERA of 6.75 in his past three contests. Along with the rest of his teammates, they have been struggling of late. This goes for the casting staff and crime.
Wheeler enters with a 4.58 ERA and 1.36 WHIP at 78.2 innings thrown on the road. The Phils have power numbers against Wheeler, since they’ve linked for 7 home runs and 22 runs in 185 plate looks. In his recent demonstrating against the Phillies, Wheeler was tattooed for 2 hits and 6 earned runs. The Phillies went for an 8-3 win.
He is a difficult matchup against Nola inside this contest. Nola has been pitching well with a 2.57 ERA and 0.71 WHIP in his past 3 outings. He hasn’t allowed more than just 3 runs so it has been over a month.
Nola has also excelled at home, posting a 2.94 ERA and also 1.21 WHIP instead of some 4.35 ERA on the street. Also keep in mind that the Mets are hitting just .215 from Nola from 209 at-bats.
