England manager Gareth Southgate is currently becoming the most from this pool of childhood talent available to him,” states World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst.
Southgate has called four uncapped players to its European Qualifiers up including 20-year-old Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount and Leicester’s 22-year-old playmaker James Maddison.
Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 21, was also selected for the first time but has been forced to pull from the group on Tuesday.
Hurst – scorer of some against West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final – says Southgate should be given credit for boosting young English talent, which he says wasn’t ordinary during his playing days.
“During our time, you would have had to undergo the club strategy and play maybe two or three decades, possibly longer as I did so, to get approved for the national group,” Hurst said.
“Today, obviously, we are choosing players for England who have kicked a ball – and now I believe that he (Southgate) has had to do that because there is less of a pool to select from.
“But he has demonstrated he can do this and be successful, by bringing forward these young gamers, unusually, who’ve hardly kicked a ball playing in the Premier League on a regular basis.
“In most respects, that is quite a remarkable achievement.”
Since Southgate triumphed Sam Allardyce as England boss in 2016, the 3 Sisters have finished fourth in the 2018 World Cup and third at the summertime Nations League finals.
Hurst says England have made progress in such a brief space of time .
“It has been a huge trip in a rather short time under Gareth Southgate and his staff,” Hurst added.
“It’s quite clear the direction of the federal side is absolutely vitally important.
“The players are all speaking (collectively ), you may see the relationship and the guys discussing how they feel playing for England.
“It is quite clear there’s an excellent awareness of teamwork and camaraderie happening, which in most respects had been a key issue at our period and is still now.”
Prior to hosting Kosovo on Tuesday england continue their Euro 2020 qualifying effort against Bulgaria on Saturday at Wembley.
