It was scary in the 8th and 9th inning for the Chicago Cubs yesterday afternoon, however, the bullpen finally got the job done to secure a 2-0 success. The night before, the Cubs managed to blow what looked like a safe lead in the 9th. However, an identical fate was not going to happen again to the Cubs. Tyler Chatwood and Rowan Wick combined to pitch three innings, allowing no runs and no hits. The mistake was Tyler Chatwood issuing a walk.
Chatwood has developed in the best reliever the Cubs have within their bullpen. Joe Maddon only hasn’t been using him often turning to his traditional relievers instead of Chatwood, who has primarily been employed as a starter in his career. Among the difficulties with not turning to Chatwood more often is the total amount of work that he gets from the bullpen.
If things are rolling, he is generally eclipsing 3 innings on the bulge, so that chooses him out of the equation to the next moment. Maddon is being careful to preserve his arm down the stretch for the most crucial time of their normal season. But after blowing what should have been a sure win on Friday night, the Cubs had to visit Chatwood to find a few of their mojo back from the clubhouse.
Jon Lester should find some recognition in that area. Lester was moving through conflicts, but appears to be back to the right track. The Cubs will require him down the stretch if they would like to be playing in October. Lester was eloquent in 6 innings, having allowed only 4 hits and no runs. The Cubs will turn into Jose Quintana tonight, although the Pirates will go with Mitch Keller on Sunday Night Baseball. Head below to our complimentary Cubs vs. Pirates pick.

Mitch Keller will be making only his fifth major league start this day and it comes in primetime on Sunday Night Baseball. The rookie is getting some valuable experience up in the big leagues with the Pirates. It’s been a choppy start to his career, with a couple horrible outings plus a couple that went pretty well. His very best effort came in his latest outing, as he had been eloquent with just 1 earned run enabled in 5 innings against the Angels at Anaheim.
In his additional positive outing, Keller surrendered 4 hits and two earned runs into the Tigers at home. The Tigers have one of the worst offenses in baseball, so that could have just been a result of playing a lousy team. Keller was abysmal against the Braves and Reds in his other two outings, permitting 12 earned runs in 7 innings of work.
Fortunatelyhe was able to bring his numbers down against the Tigers and the Angels, but the damage was done. Keller heads into Sunday night by an ERA of both 7.94 and 2.00 WHIP. He would find a enormous rush of confidence if tonight proves to be a victory nighttime at the workplace. I’m not so sure he gets from this one using a stellar stat line, however. The Cubs slept afternoon and holding them down like that again is going to be tough for the Pirates.
The Pirates get a date with Quintana tonight at the dish. He’s been pitching extremely well lately. The Athletics and Phillies scored just two runs in total throughout 13 innings of play Quintana. Quintana goes to this one with the astonishing 1.89 ERA and also 0.79 WHIP in his previous three outings.
It’s been five trips since he’s allowed more than 3 runs in a start and less runs in seven of his past eight appearences. The Pirates are hitting on just .202 with 3 home runs strike from Quintana from 124 showings in the plate. The Cubs have had their own battles on the road in 2019, but look for them to wrap this up road trip with a win on Sunday Night Baseball.
