The Chicago Cubs keep their road trip in Pittsburgh against the Pirates this weekend. It’s been matter how abysmal they’ve been on the road in 2019 and that has been the recurring motif for them in Philadelphia from the Phillies. The Cubs were swept at a three-game series, concluding with a walk-off grand hit by Bryce Harper on Thursday night.
Pedro Strop acquired his staff to trouble again, since he allowed two earned runs with no obligations and Derek Holland followed his lead to finish the match off with an at-bat against Harper. For those issues he has had striking out at the plate,” Harper’s WPA paths only Christian Yelich of the Brewers. His walk-off slam propelled that amount.
For the Cubs, their offense had a hangover contrary to the Pirates last night, since they generated nothing against Joe Musgrove until getting to him in the 8th inning by putting a runner on 3rd with 1 out. The operation by Kyle Hendricks has been a welcome sign, as was the effort of Yu Darvish on Thursday night. It’s a hard bullet to take after you get production out of Darvish and Hendricks then have nothing in return, but charge to Hendricks for maintaining the Cubs from the match a night past.
He also gets the game ball for storing them in the game to provide Tony Kemp an opportunity for some go-ahead triple. Expecting the Cubs’ bullpen to shut the game out from the 9th was somewhat too much to ask, though. Jon Lester will get the call for the Cubs on Saturday in PNC Park.
Lester was distressed for a bounce back performance in his last outing, and he wasn’t ideal, but was considerably better than he had been formerly pitching. The confidence in his step appeared to be back. Conversely, the Pirates will be countered for by the Steven Brault. The Pirates will be seeking only their fourth win since August 3rd, since they’ve gone 3-9 within their past 12 outings. Among those wins came on a walk-off walk. Steven Brault has ever just had a standout career in his four-year profession, but he’s at least been consistently average. Brault has a career ERA of 4.57 and he’s hovered around that mark pretty well his entire career in the major leagues. He is on pace for a career-high with an ERA of 4.33 going into Saturday. In his past three outings, Brault published a 4.50 ERA in 14 innings pitched. He hasn’t wavered too large or too low during his profession.
Consistency like that can produce a pitcher a lot of cash as a centre of the rotation option. He’s coming off what could have been a much better performance against the Cardinals. Brault enabled 4 earned runs in 4.2 innings of work, with surrendered 5 hits and 3 walks as well.
The Cubs have destroyed Brault in his profession. They are hitting .343 with a .452 OBP in 102 at-bats against Brault. The Cubs also have scored 24 runs on Brault in that interval. If they are effective against Brault in the plate , they might not need to be worried about the bullpen blowing an outcome.
Lester has allowed 23 runs into the Pirates, but with a lot more plate appearances than the Cubs have had against Brault. The Bucs are hitting against .255 from Lester at 231 at-bats. They are hitting only .242 against lefties about the season as opposed to .269 versus right-handed pitching.
The Cubs input Saturday to some four-game losing streak with declines in six of the past seven matches, all of which have come on the road. How much more pathetic can it make to the Cubs? I think they find it in themselves to avoid more embarrassment and avoid collapsing on Saturday behind Lester. The Cubs probably return on track for its second at Pittsburgh in this one.
