Against the Spread Pick
The D.C. United and Colorado Rapids are kicking off the 2020 Major League Soccer Season on Saturday afternoon. Both clubs are coming off mediocre 2019 campaigns. D.C. earned the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs with 50 points and promptly got humiliated by FC Toronto 5-1 during first-round action. Colorado missed the postseason festivities, finishing with 42 points for ninth place in the Western Conference. It was not a productive offseason in the nation’s capital, as D.C. added little and former stars Wayne Rooney and Luciano Acosta are gone. Moreover, midfielder Paul Arriola is likely out for the year due to a recent torn ACL. Colorado surrendered a dreadful 63 goals in 2019 but shored up its defense with the additions of Lalas Abubakar and Auston Trusty. The RAPIDS should be able to come away with at least one point this weekend.
Over Under Pick
D.C. was the best defensive squad in the East last season and second best overall behind only the L.A. FC (38 goals allowed). At the same time, the Black and Red found the back of the net only 42 ties–fourth fewest in Major League Soccer. Combined with D.C.’ losses on offense and Colorado’s gains on the other side of the field, it could be a struggle to score for the home team. Go with the UNDER.
