Diego Simeone’s Rojiblancos had a summer of serious movement, the most prominent of which watched Portuguese wonderkid Joao Felix join on a list 120M-euro deal from Benfica. Atleti also looked strong in pre-season drama — for what that is worth — scoring a 7-3 win over Real Madrid at New Jersey along with a 2-1 win over Juventus at Stockholm.
Historical trends also let’s Simeone’s squad is a very safe bet: Atletico finished ahead of Real Madrid in 2017-18 and 2018-19, and has not finished outside the top three (or below anybody apart from Bar??a and Real) because 2011-12.

There are two other genuine challengers for Atletico from Sevilla (+800) and Valencia (+600); the former hasn’t finished ahead of Atletico since 2010-11, while the latter hasn’t since 2011-12.
It remains to be seen whether new boss Julen Lopetegui can steer Sevilla back to being a normal top-five squad; the Spain youth coach struggled in his only prior high-profile club project at Porto.
At Valencia, a good summer has seen director Marcelino add quality pieces from goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen (Barcelona) and ahead Maxi Gomez (Celta); last year was a wild ride for the Valencians, that started horribly but caught fire down the stretch to finish fourth, and their summertime developments ought to have them in the top five this year.
It’s intriguing to notice a deficiency of odds love for Getafe (+4000), which ended a club-best 5th at La Liga last year but is expected to fight with valve congestion and regress to a more typical mid-table finish.
Given that Atletico added a quality and Simeone’s club always punches over the weight of its squad on paper, it’s unlikely either will give it a serious run on this prop bet.
Select: Atletico Madrid (-250)
Let us keep it civil and have fun.
